Devon has been gripped by heavy snowfall, causing major traffic disruption across the county. The A38 and A380 have been severely affected, with multiple road closures and significant delays expected to continue into the evening.

The A38 westbound is currently closed both ways from Great Haldon to the Kennford turnoff, while vehicles have become stuck on the A380 at Telegraph Hill. The road has been closed in both directions as snow continues to accumulate.

Further complications have arisen as snow and fog add to the motoring misery on the A38, particularly around the Racecourse at Haldon, where traffic has temporarily been held southbound, with delays of around 45 minutes.

One driver, stuck on a country lane while heading from Exeter towards Torbay, reported being stranded for 40 minutes. “People were leaving their cars,” they said, reflecting the frustration of many caught in the weather’s grip.

Meanwhile, the A380 is closed southbound and westbound at Splatford Split due to snow, with queueing traffic from Teignmouth Road (A381) to the Splatford Split. The A380 northbound remains closed, while the A38 eastbound is still open.

Further snow-related incidents have been reported across the region. The A3079 Holsworthy Road has been rendered impassable due to snow between the Tavistock turnoff and Thorndon Cross.

However, police and highways sources have confirmed that all lanes on this road and other affected routes have now been reopened.

The Met Office’s amber snow warning remains in place until 9pm tonight, with major travel disruptions expected to persist throughout the evening. Drivers are urged to remain cautious, especially on untreated roads, which could be particularly treacherous.

Councillor Stuart Hughes of Devon County Council cautioned, “Ice can form even on treated routes. Our gritter drivers are working hard, but if your journey tomorrow morning is essential, please allow extra time, drive carefully, and take extra care.”
