A major route into Exeter, the A377, has been closed in both directions this morning (January 5) following heavy overnight rainfall that caused significant flooding across Devon.

The affected section stretches for approximately three miles between Crediton and Newton St Cyres, leaving motorists facing disruption during the busy morning commute.

The flooding has made Station Road in Newton St Cyres impassable as water from the River Creedy continues to rise. The road will remain closed until the water levels recede. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes to avoid the area.

Elsewhere, Hunsdon Road near Ivybridge has also been reported as flooded and impassable. Additionally, a power cut has knocked out traffic lights at Exe Bridges in Exeter, prompting warnings for drivers to exercise extra caution when passing through the area.

In addition to the weather-related disruptions, planned overnight maintenance will close Bad Homburg Way between the Park & Ride roundabout and the Devon Hotel roundabout on Monday 6 January and Tuesday 7 January from 7pm to 6am. Fully signed diversions will be in place, but the schedule may change depending on weather conditions.

The Met Office predicts rain will persist across the Exeter area until late this morning, easing around 11am. However, conditions will remain cold, with risks of frost and ice forming overnight as temperatures drop below freezing.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys, and stay updated on the latest road and weather conditions.
