The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings for snow and ice across the South West this weekend as the UK endures a prolonged cold snap.
Residents are being urged to prepare for challenging conditions, with disruptions to travel, potential power outages, and increased safety risks anticipated.
Parts of Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset are expected to experience heavy snowfall, with accumulations of up to 15cm in some higher areas. Freezing overnight temperatures will likely lead to hazardous icy patches on roads and pavements, making travel particularly treacherous.
The Met Office has warned that untreated roads may become impassable, and public transport services are likely to face cancellations.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen emphasised the seriousness of the situation, stating: “We’re looking at a combination of snow and ice that could have significant impacts. It’s important for everyone to stay updated with the latest forecasts and plan accordingly.”
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to check for updates before heading out. Stocking up on essentials and preparing for potential power cuts is recommended, particularly for those in rural areas.
Communities are being encouraged to check in on vulnerable neighbours who may need additional support during the cold weather.
The cold snap is expected to persist into early next week, with temperatures predicted to rise gradually by midweek. However, the South West is likely to remain cold, and further wintry showers cannot be ruled out.
