The Met Office has warned that the transition period between 2024 and 2025 is set to bring unsettled weather conditions to parts of the UK, with the South West potentially affected by wind, rain, and even snow as the new year begins.
Currently, high pressure is dominating the UK, leading to overcast skies, low cloud, and fog for many areas.
Neil Armstrong, Met Office Chief Forecaster, explained: “From Sunday, we will start to see some heavy rain affecting northwestern parts of Scotland. After a brief respite, further rain and strong winds will arrive on Monday and Tuesday as another area of low pressure approaches. This may be accompanied by some heavy snowfall in the mountains and perhaps to lower elevations.”
A Yellow National Severe Weather Warning for rain has been issued for Monday and Tuesday in Scotland, with additional warnings expected as confidence in the forecast grows. While the exact track of these low-pressure systems remains uncertain, the Met Office anticipates that the unsettled conditions could extend further south, potentially impacting the South West with disruptive wind, rain, and snow from New Year’s Day onwards.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson added: “Later in the week, wintry showers are likely to be a feature of the forecast as a cold northerly flow becomes established.”
With the potential for rapidly changing weather, Neil Armstrong urged people to stay informed: “With such varied and potentially fast-moving weather conditions, it is important for people to keep up to date with the forecast.”
Residents across the South West and beyond are advised to monitor updates closely, especially those travelling during the festive season.
