The South West is bracing for a period of unsettled weather this weekend, with heavy rain and very strong winds set to sweep across the region.
A deep area of low pressure will move across the UK, particularly impacting northern and central areas on Saturday. However, the South West can expect its share of disruptions, including gale-force winds and widespread rainfall.
The Met Office has issued National Severe Weather Warnings for both Saturday and Sunday, highlighting the potential for travel disruptions and dangerous conditions.
Rebekah Hicks, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "This period of disruptive weather coincides with a busy time for UK roads as many head out for the festive getaway. Strong winds and heavy rain will affect much of the UK, but the South West should also prepare for challenging travel conditions."
Saturday will bring heavy rain and winds that could reach up to 60 mph across the South West, with coastal areas particularly at risk. As the low pressure system continues its path, the weather will remain unsettled through Sunday, with winds easing slightly but still gusting to around 50 mph in exposed areas.
Transport networks are expected to be impacted, especially for those travelling by road, rail, or ferry. With the Christmas rush underway, disruptions are likely, including delays, cancellations, and potential closures due to high winds, particularly in coastal and elevated areas.
Looking ahead to Christmas, the weather is set to become more settled. Christmas Eve will see mild temperatures and breezy conditions, with rain possible in the west and clearer spells in the east. Christmas Day is expected to be mostly dry and cloudy, with mild temperatures, but the risk of strong winds and rain remains in the far north. The chance of a white Christmas in the South West is slim, as the forecast suggests a very mild start to the holiday season.
Travellers are urged to check the latest weather updates and allow extra time for journeys as the weather conditions evolve throughout the weekend.
