A new bus stop and shelter on Seaton’s Esplanade is providing a modern, eco-friendly upgrade for public transport users, as part of a countywide initiative to enhance local transport facilities.

The shelter features a unique ‘living roof’ planted with low-maintenance greenery, which attracts pollinators such as bees and insects, helping to strengthen the connection between public transport and nature.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) has outlined its next steps to further improve the surrounding area, building on the success of this project. Over 70 similar eco-friendly shelters have already been installed across the county, as part of efforts to modernise the region’s public transport infrastructure.

The Seaton bus shelter was funded through the Department for Transport Bus Service Improvement Plan, with significant contributions from Seaton Town Council for associated works. The shelter also includes an electronic ‘real-time’ information display, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, spoke positively about the new addition. “This new bus stop in Seaton provides a safer and more pleasant waiting area for passengers. The living roof design has been well-received across the county, showcasing how public transport can contribute to the local environment. We’re excited to see how this improvement will complement future developments along Seaton’s seafront.”

As the bus shelter project nears completion, attention is shifting to the surrounding open space. EDDC has acknowledged mixed feelings from residents and visitors about the removal of the previous flower beds. While some are saddened by their loss, others view it as an opportunity to rethink and enhance the area.

The district council has adopted a phased approach, keeping the space open for now in order to observe how it functions without additional street furniture. This will allow the community to consider potential changes that could enhance the area and make it more inviting for visitors.

Councillor Geoff Jung, EDDC’s Portfolio Holder for Coast, Country and Environment, said: “We know this area is a focal point for Seaton, and we want to ensure any future changes truly reflect the needs of the community. By leaving the space open temporarily, we can explore creative and practical solutions that enhance vibrancy and attract more visitors to the seafront.”

However, the council has emphasized that some changes may be limited in the short term due to the long-awaited coastal defence works planned for 2025. These works are likely to require use of the area, which could affect the timing and scope of any improvements.

While plans for the space are still in the early stages, EDDC is committed to consulting with the public and taking their feedback into account. The council will ensure that any future developments are feasible, safe, and sustainable. Before moving forward with any ideas, internal discussions will focus on identifying statutory requirements and safety considerations.

In the meantime, the flower beds at the central roundabout, owned and maintained by the town council, will remain intact. Both councils are also exploring the potential removal of a narrow, damaged flowerbed along the seawall to the east when budgets allow.

This phased and community-driven approach will help ensure that Seaton’s Esplanade continues to thrive as a vibrant and sustainable space for both locals and visitors.
