Exciting plans are being explored for the future of the King George V (KGV) Playing Fields on Topsham Road.

With Exeter City Community Trust (ECCT) partnering with Exeter City Council to reimagine this much-loved green space, a public consultation has launched to ensure community voices shape the 40-acre site's redevelopment.

The proposed vision for the KGV Playing Fields is ambitious, aiming to preserve its natural charm while enhancing its facilities.

Key goals include developing health, wellbeing, and leisure amenities; improving access and safety; creating a gateway to Riverside Valley Park; and fostering inclusivity for people of all ages and backgrounds.

The project particularly seeks to support groups often underrepresented in sports, including women, para-sports athletes, and those from lower socio-economic and ethnic minority backgrounds.

Among the improvements under consideration are:

- Upgraded grass pitches and resurfaced tennis courts

- Floodlit multi-use play zones for activities like basketball, netball, and cricket

- A state-of-the-art 3G artificial grass pitch

- Woodland trails, picnic areas, and expanded parking

- A refurbished pavilion with a café, event space, accessible changing rooms, and multi-use facilities

The project also aligns with the historical ethos of the site, established in 1936 to provide recreational opportunities for the public under King George V’s legacy.

Home to sports clubs such as Central FC, Exeter City Girls' Junior Premier League teams, and Exeter Spitfires Baseball Club, the playing fields remain a vital community hub.

“This much-treasured piece of land has been enjoyed by generations,” said Jamie Vittles, chief executive of Exeter City Community Trust. “We are proud to work alongside Exeter City Council to revitalise this space, ensuring it remains accessible and relevant for future generations.”

Public feedback is integral to shaping these plans. The consultation will run until January 6, 2025, with ECCT representatives hosting on-site activities to gather ideas.

Residents are also encouraged to share their views via the online survey here.

The revitalisation project reflects the shared commitment of ECCT and Fields in Trust to safeguard green spaces and promote active, inclusive lifestyles. Vittles added: “Through consultation, we aim to create a vision that reflects the community's needs, preserving the spirit of KGV while ensuring it thrives as a resource for everyone.”
