The South West faces significant disruptions as Storm Bert intensifies.

With the Met Office issuing a yellow rain warning from 6am on Saturday, November 23, to 11:45pm on Sunday, November 24, and a yellow wind warning from 9am Saturday to 9pm Sunday.

Devon, Cornwall, and surrounding areas will see relentless rainfall, particularly impacting Devon, where up to 14 flood alerts and 12 warnings are expected.

Strong winds could cause hazardous coastal conditions, debris, and flying material.

Exeter and St Ives have already reported power outages, with 109 properties affected in St Ives.

Travel disruptions are widespread. South Western Railway services between Exeter St Davids and London Waterloo will terminate at Basingstoke, and speed restrictions between Salisbury and Exeter will increase journey times. Safety inspections will delay Sunday and Monday services. Authorities advise against non-essential travel west of Basingstoke.

Bus services are still up and running.

Flood alerts are issued for South Dartmoor, East Devon, and South Devon Coastal areas, including during Sunday’s high tide.

Beach material could wash onto roads, and fallen debris may block drains, exacerbating flooding risks. Coastal areas and highways may experience disruptions.

Devon’s Highways Cabinet Member, Councillor Stuart Hughes, emphasized preparedness: "There is a chance Storm Bert will cause disruption to travel. Please drive according to conditions, avoid floodwaters, and be alert to unexpected hazards."

Emergency teams and local wardens are on standby for drain clearance and debris removal.

Despite the warnings, Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market remains open but may adjust hours if conditions worsen.

Updates to follow.
