Exeter city centre businesses have overwhelmingly voted in favour of renewing InExeter, the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), for a third five-year term.

The result secures £2.8 million in funding to continue vital projects aimed at enhancing the city centre and supporting its business community from April 2025 to March 2030.

With 90% of votes cast in support, including 96% by rateable value, the decision marks a strong show of confidence in InExeter’s work over the past decade.

Out of 334 eligible businesses that participated during the four-week ballot (October 24-November 21), the 48% turnout exceeded the required threshold for the renewal.

InExeter is the Business Improvement District for Exeter city centre. A BID is a business-led partnership created through a ballot process to deliver additional services to local businesses over a five-year period.

Since its establishment in 2015, InExeter has spearheaded projects that have made Exeter more vibrant and welcoming. The organisation works by pooling contributions from levy-paying businesses, which are then reinvested into the city.

Nicola Wheeler, CEO of InExeter, expressed gratitude for the strong support:

“Thank you to all the businesses who have backed us for another term. This resounding ‘yes’ is a testament to the strength of our business community and its shared commitment to creating a thriving, forward-thinking city centre. Together, we’ve achieved so much, and we’re excited to continue this journey.”

Looking ahead, the secured funding will go towards a range of projects designed to benefit the city’s daytime, evening, and night-time economies. Planned initiatives include:

- Continued investment in the Community Safety Team, ensuring a safer city for all.

- A seven-day street cleansing service to maintain clean and inviting public spaces.

- Seasonal features like festive lighting and greening initiatives to enhance Exeter’s charm.

- Creative projects such as 10 new street art installations to celebrate Exeter’s unique character.

By focusing on these priorities, InExeter aims to boost footfall, enhance the city’s appeal, and create an even better environment for businesses and visitors alike.

In its first two terms, InExeter has played a pivotal role in supporting local businesses, enhancing public spaces, and ensuring the city adapts to challenges.

The renewed term provides an opportunity to build on these successes and deliver even more for Exeter’s vibrant community.
