Protest staged against water companies

Hundreds of Devon beach lovers turned out in force over the weekend to protest against the actions of water companies.

The show of unity was organised by Surfers Against Sewage.

An SAS spokesperson said: "We came together for a national day of action to show water companies and regulators that we will not stand for another summer of swimming in sewage."

In Exmouth, a floating poo was launched and people holding placards on the Esplanade cheered those who ventured into the sea.

While some took to their paddleboards or kayaks others enjoyed a bracing early summer dip.

The SAS spokesperson added: "This is the year that water companies and regulators are setting out their investment plans (PR24) for the next five years (2025 – 2030) which means it is the perfect time to ramp up the pressure.

"We need the water companies, the regulators and the Government to listen to what we have to say. Enough is enough."
