Abseiling engineers to carry out repairs to quayside wall

A team of abseiling engineers is to carry out strengthening work to a high-profile wall on Exeter’s quayside.

Repair and stabilisation works are being carried out by Exeter City Council to a 105-metre stretch of cliff face wall above Exeter Quay on the city centre side of the River Exe.

The work, which will include masonry repairs, structural reinforcement, the installation of ‘anchors’ and replacement of rock-fall netting, will be carried out over an 11-week period starting on Monday 19 February.

Visual inspections of the masonry wall and cliff face were recently carried out and permission to carry out the works given the go-ahead by the City Council’s planning committee.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management, said the work was necessary to maintain the structural integrity of the cliff and quayside.

She added: “We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause. We are doing everything possible to notify local residents and businesses about the works.

“Our contractor will make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and as far as possible the Quay Cellar businesses and quayside footpath will remain open throughout the works. However, there will be some closures required but we will try and limit these.”
