International rugby star to appear at charity gala

Will Carling will be appearing at Sandy Park

Beat the scrum to snap up tickets for a prestigious gala dinner with guest speaker, former international rugby star Will Carling.

Expect tales from Will’s time as England rugby captain at the event, which takes place at Sandy Park on Friday March 22 and is being held to raise funds for Age UK Exeter, a charity which has been supporting local people aged over 50 for more than 30 years.

The evening includes a three-course meal, DJ and other entertainment, photo opportunities and a charity auction.

A fantastic rugby speaker, Will Carling OBE held the helm of one of the nation’s most successful rugby squads in history. He is one of England’s youngest, longest-serving and successful captains to date. With an overwhelmingly impressive achievement history, from driving England in 1991 to become runners up in the World Cup, to conquering the five nations with Grand Slams in 1991, 1992 and 1995.

After graduating with a degree in psychology and serving in the Royal Regiment of Wales, Will’s rugby career came to fruition when he played for the Harlequins, acquiring his natural position as centre in 1987. He was made England rugby captain at the young age of 22, transferring his leadership, discipline and team co-ordination abilities that he had developed from his experiences in the army, and concentrating them to push England to sporting success.

All of the funds raised from the event will go towards Age UK Exeter’s work in the city. The charity’s services are in increasing need with demand doubling over the same three-month period from 2022 to 2023.

Age UK Exeter supports anyone over the age of 50 in Exeter who is experiencing isolation, living with dementia, caring for a loved one, wanting to access social groups and exercise classes, or needing information and advice to help them make the most of later life, whatever their circumstances.

Nicky Flynn, chief executive of Age UK Exeter, said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming Will Carling to Exeter, it promises to be a very entertaining evening. This is a major fundraising event for our charity and, as well as bringing in vital cash, we’re looking forward to fabulous evening.

“Aging is something which affects us all - so community support is so important to us. Our charity is totally reliant on fundraising and donations, and demand for our services is growing, from July to September 2023, we had over 10,000 contacts with older people which has doubled from last year.”

Tickets are available on Eventbrite or contact Age UK Exeter on 01392 202092 or email Fundraising@ageukexeter.org.uk
