Bickleigh Bridge, the Grade II listed structure that carries the A396 over the River Exe, will undergo an emergency closure later this week to address several large trees lodged against its piers.
The closure is scheduled for Thursday, 16 January, and Friday, 17 January, from 9.30am to 3.30pm, as the Devon County Council bridges team works to remove the debris and inspect the bridge for potential damage.
Recent flooding in the area has caused trees and other debris to wash downstream, accumulating against the bridge. While the bridge is equipped with steel nosings to mitigate impacts from such debris, concerns remain about possible structural damage.
A visual inspection will be conducted during the closure, though a comprehensive assessment will only be possible once water levels recede.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: "We need to ensure that this Listed bridge is protected from damage, so it’s essential that we remove the debris in order to prevent it causing extensive damage to the structure. To minimise disruption, the timings of the closure have been restricted to avoid the busiest parts of the day. Every effort will be made to complete this work as soon as possible and get the bridge open."
Councillor Margaret Squires, who represents Creedy, Taw, and Mid Exe, echoed the sentiment: "It is essential that this necessary work is carried out to maintain the historic bridge. The work is being planned to cause the least possible disruption, and I would like to thank the public in anticipation for their patience whilst the work is being completed."
During the closure, drivers will need to follow a signed diversion via the A3072, A377, and A396.
Bickleigh Bridge is not only a vital transportation link but also an important piece of local history. The Council’s proactive measures aim to preserve the structure while ensuring public safety.
Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time during the closure period.
