The Exeter Neighbourhood Police Team is calling on the local community to help spread festive cheer by donating food items for Christmas hampers, which will be distributed to elderly and vulnerable residents.

This annual initiative, launched in 2020, aims to support those who may be socially isolated during the festive season.

Sergeant Jim Wellard, who is leading the campaign, emphasized the importance of community support:

“As a team, we witness daily how crime and anti-social behaviour impact older and vulnerable people. This is our chance to give back. We would be incredibly grateful for donations of items like mince pies, Christmas cake, chocolates, tea, coffee, and tinned goods to create as many hampers as possible.”

Donors can visit the Exeter Police Facebook page to arrange contributions or email 30444@dc.police.uk  for further coordination. Direct messages on social media are discouraged to streamline the process.

Loneliness during Christmas is a significant challenge for many elderly individuals. According to Red Rose Care, feelings of isolation can intensify during the holidays, often leading to mental health struggles.

Similarly, Friary Care highlights how community-led initiatives and acts of kindness can provide much-needed connection and joy to those who live alone or are socially isolated.

Efforts like the Exeter Police hamper drive play a crucial role in addressing these issues, offering not just essential items but a sense of community and care during a potentially difficult time of year.

The festive season brings an influx of shoppers and visitors to Exeter, and Devon & Cornwall Police are ramping up efforts to ensure safety. Sergeant Jim Wellard explained: “As a team we see first-hand how crime and anti-social behaviour affects older and vulnerable people every day and we are fortunate enough to be able to give back to the community.

Chief Superintendent Roy Linden also highlighted the increased patrols to deter crimes such as shoplifting, drink driving, and domestic violence: “Our officers will be highly visible during peak times, patrolling in both plain clothes and uniform in areas where crimes are likely to occur,” said Ch. Supt Linden. “We’re also focused on seasonal issues like alcohol-related violence and crimes against women. If you ever feel unsafe or spot something suspicious, approach an officer - they’re here to help.”

The force is also promoting safety initiatives like the Ask for Angela scheme, which discreetly assists individuals who feel unsafe in licensed venues. A night bus service is available every Saturday in Torbay, running from 12:30am to 4:30am, providing affordable late-night travel.

Ch. Supt Linden also addressed domestic abuse, a crime that tends to rise during the holidays. “For those affected, our officers are here to protect and support you, no matter the time. To perpetrators, we are relentless in pursuing justice and will use every available tool to prevent further harm.”

The police encourage residents to follow simple crime prevention measures, such as securing homes and belongings, to deter opportunistic offenders. “A few proactive steps can make a big difference,” said Ch. Supt Linden.

The campaign to collect food for Christmas hampers aligns with the broader mission to foster community safety and connection. “Many people live alone or lack social interaction over Christmas,” added Sgt Wellard. “Spreading some festive cheer can make a world of difference.”
