Exeter’s city centre was awash with red suits, white beards, and festive cheer as 500 Santa’s swapped sleighs for trainers in this year’s much-loved Santa Run.
Organised by Exeter City Community Trust (ECCT), the charitable arm of Exeter City Football Club, the event saw adults, children, and even some four-legged friends, tackle either a 2.5k or 5k route on Sunday morning.
The event brought together a wonderfully diverse crowd, including 30 young runners from Newton St Cyres Primary School and their families.
They ran in support of Exeter Leukaemia Fund, a charity that supported three-year-old Sophia Windsor through her battle with leukaemia at just 17 months old. Now cancer-free, Sophia joined the fun, proving that even the tiniest Santa can make a big impact.
Local sporting stars also joined the action, with Exeter City FC manager Gary Caldwell trading tactics for a place on the pitch alongside assistant manager Kevin Nicholson and first-team coach David Perkins.
Not to be outdone, the Exeter City Women’s team made an appearance, led by manager Abbie Britton and featuring players like Jess Sandland and Bow Jackson, who brought their winning spirit to the festive field.
“The Santa Run is always a fantastic community event and perfect way to begin the festive season” said Jamie Vittles, Chief Executive of ECCT. “Thank you to everyone who helps us to stage the event, including our volunteers, sponsors and community partners.”
Speaking of teamwork, event sponsors Tozers and community partners ILEC Group, Trowers and Hamlins, Robson Finance, and Radio Exe, united to bring the magic to life for this jolly good cause.
The Santa Run is just one of many events hosted by ECCT to keep Exeter moving and smiling year-round. With the Half Marathon coming up in February, the Granite Way races in March, and the flagship Exeter Live Better Marathon in May, there’s plenty more on the calendar for running enthusiasts.
Whether it was the sea of Santa’s or the wagging tails, this year’s Santa Run reminded everyone that Christmas spirit is best when shared – even if it is a little sweaty.
