Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell is confident yet cautious as his side prepares to face League Two newcomers Chesterfield in the Emirates FA Cup second round at St James Park this Saturday.
A place in the coveted third round, a feat the Grecians haven’t achieved since 2021, is up for grabs.
City’s journey to this stage has already been dramatic, with a thrilling 5-3 victory over National League side Barnet in round one. While Caldwell acknowledges the excitement of such games, he hopes for a more controlled performance against Chesterfield.
"It’s the magic of the cup," Caldwell said. "This will be no different as a tough game against a side who are very good and have aspirations to play in our league. They're on a decent run of form."
The Spireites, in their first season back in League Two, are proving to be a formidable side. Last year, they upset Portsmouth in the FA Cup, showcasing their ability to topple teams higher up the football pyramid. Caldwell is under no illusions about the challenge ahead.
"We have to be at our very best if we want to get into round three amongst the big boys," he added. "We always focus on ourselves, implementing the principles we feel can be better. If we take that into the game, I believe we can beat anyone."
Despite the challenges posed by recent fixtures, including tough encounters with high-flying sides like Wrexham and Birmingham, Caldwell sees growth in his squad.
"The players are constantly trying to improve, and the squad is good. Everyone has knocks this time of year, but that’s part of being a professional footballer. We’ll put out the strongest, best team possible to win this cup tie," he said.
On the injury front, there’s positive news for Exeter fans. Caldwell hinted that some of the previously side-lined players are nearing a return, providing a timely boost for the squad.
With the Grecians aiming to keep their cup dream alive, Saturday’s clash promises another dose of FA Cup magic. With determination running high, they’re ready to deliver a memorable performance in front of the home crowd. Up the City!
