Fitness has just become a whole lot more inclusive in Exminster, thanks to a ground-breaking partnership between Westbank Community Health and Care and the Exeter Chiefs Foundation.

The rugby club’s charitable arm has funded a state-of-the-art adaptive multi-gym, the Equalizer 6000, which allows people of all abilities to pursue their fitness goals.

The gym is part of Westbank’s Gymclusive, a newly revamped fitness initiative that aims to be as inclusive as it is innovative. The Equalizer 6000, designed by a paraplegic athlete, provides an extensive range of workout options for disabled and able-bodied users alike -think bench presses, rowing, and vertical butterflies, all adapted for wheelchair accessibility.

The Exeter Chiefs Foundation, renowned for supporting projects that deliver tangible community benefits, donated almost £7,000 for this cutting-edge equipment.

Trustees David Bird and Keiron Northcott visited Gymclusive to witness the impact of their investment.

Bird was quick to praise the facility, saying, I’m really impressed with the variety of equipment and how it fits the needs of everyone in the community. The new exercise station is fantastic - I even gave it a go and loved it!”

Fellow trustee Northcott echoed his sentiments, calling the setup at Gymclusive an "eye-opener." He emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to long-lasting projects, adding, This gym is a perfect example of how a well-thought-out investment can significantly improve lives.”

Gymclusive isn’t just about fitness - it’s about empowerment. From individuals with long-term health conditions to those recovering from injuries or managing reduced mobility, the gym aims to remove barriers and provide a welcoming space for everyone.

Certified trainers with expertise in adaptive fitness ensure members feel supported every step of the way.

Katie Elliott, Westbank’s Head of Fundraising and Marketing, described the Equalizer 6000 as the “missing piece of the jigsaw,” enabling Westbank to further its mission of improving health and wellbeing across Devon.

Membership fees from Gymclusive are reinvested into other community initiatives, amplifying the gym’s impact far beyond its walls.

The Exeter Chiefs Foundation has supported nearly 120 charities over five seasons, granting more than £3 million in funding. As Foundation Chairman Tony Rowe CBE stated, “This is another example of how we’re using our platform to invest in causes that truly matter.”

By equipping Westbank’s Gymclusive with this remarkable adaptive gym, the Foundation is setting a new standard for inclusive fitness in the South West.

For anyone inspired to see what Gymclusive has to offer, it’s time to drop by and witness the transformation in action.
