Ottery St Mary’s Otter Garden Centre recently welcomed a group of Exeter College students, offering them an invaluable glimpse into the hustle and bustle of a commercial kitchen.
The initiative saw nine NVQ Level 1 Catering Craft and Food Service students step into real-world roles, from piping chocolate lettering to preparing fish for frying.
The visit was orchestrated by Otter Catering Manager Arron Taylor, an alumnus of Exeter College, after being approached by his former tutor Stafford Pitts. Taylor described the opportunity as a way to provide students with vital hands-on experience.
“It’s always exciting to bring the next generation into a real-world setting,” he remarked.
College tutors Stafford Pitts and Chef Lecturer Stuart Fowls accompanied the students, offering support throughout the day. Pitts was full of praise for the group, saying, “This year’s students are delightful and showed immense enthusiasm. Stepping into a busy commercial kitchen can be intimidating, but they rose to the challenge admirably.”
This collaborative effort not only broadened the students' practical understanding but also showcased the adaptability required in a fast-paced environment. While Exeter College’s @thirty-four restaurant gives students regular hands-on practice, working at Otter Garden Centre pushed them to navigate unfamiliar surroundings and collaborate with new teams.
Pitts emphasized the importance of such opportunities in preparing students for diverse careers. The NVQ program equips learners with qualifications in food and beverage service, as well as food preparation, paving the way for future roles such as Commis Chef or Chef de Partie in a range of settings, from cruise ships to local restaurants.
Otter Garden Centres, a family-run business established in 1964, continues its commitment to sustainability alongside nurturing community initiatives. The business, which grows 80% of the plants it sells, is spearheading eco-friendly practices like solar panels and peat-free composting, ensuring a greener future for the South West.
For the students, this day at Otter was more than just a work placement - it was a stepping stone toward fulfilling careers in the hospitality industry.
