Exeter volunteers have contributed 150 hours to revitalising key public areas in the city as part of InExeter's new initiative, Neighbourhood Action Days.

InExeter, the Business Improvement District (BID) for Exeter city centre, is celebrating its community-driven initiative, which has helped rejuvenate key areas of the city.

Led by Projects Manager Mattie Richardson, these Neighbourhood Action Days have already made a lasting impact on Exeter’s streets and public spaces.

There have been improvements to Gandy Street near the RAMM Museum, the Castle Quarter walkway between Exeter Phoenix and Exeter Library, and important thoroughfares like Sidwell Street and South Street, including Coombe Street, which links the city centre to Exeter Quay.

These events have sought to instil a sense of local pride in the community, connecting people dedicating their time and resources to a wider cause.

A team from Primark joined the Neighbourhood Action Day on South Street.

Primark store manager, Aaron Bliss, said: “My team had a fantastic experience—the day was so fulfilling that they said they’d do it even if it weren’t a workday. That sense of accomplishment makes it all the more worthwhile, and I’m excited to be part of the next one.”

Volunteers have worked diligently on litter picking, sweeping, weeding, pathway cleaning, flower bed maintenance, and rejuvenating street furniture, enhancing green spaces for future public enjoyment.

So far, 60 wheelbarrows of weeds have been cleared from the city.

Laura Bowden, a local resident and volunteer, shared her positive experience: "I met so many interesting people and really enjoyed the physical nature of the day. It felt great to contribute to the community while working in nature, which I’ve missed since moving into a flat."

Nooko Ltd was one business that contributed resources to the most recent action day.

Max Sayers, director of Nooko Ltd, said: "As someone with a strong connection to Exeter, it's fantastic to see projects like this benefiting the whole community. I was eager to donate materials to support and hope this initiative continues to grow—by working together, we can create a better city for all."

The final Neighbourhood Action Day of the year will take place on Tuesday, October 1, focusing on Magdalen Road as a vibrant shopping area.

Planned activities include planting spring bulbs, weeding, litter picking, and refreshing street furniture.

Nicola Wheeler, CEO of InExeter, said: "We are dedicated to supporting local businesses and improving Exeter’s streetscape. Even small actions can lead to big changes, and we encourage everyone to join us in making our city a more beautiful and welcoming place."
