Devon County Council are yet to approve plans to replace Mallison Bridge on Exeter Quay.

Exeter residents have shared images on Facebook of what appear to be workmen carrying out early preparation work to replace the popular bridge.

The bridge, which used to be part of a popular cycle route around the city, provided pedestrians with a convenient route across the water.

It was closed in 2018 after engineers identified structural issues caused by rot, and was subsequently removed in 2020.

In March this year, the council announced it had secured £1.1 million to fund the replacement bridge, following the Department for Transport's (DfT) allocation of £101 million for 'high-quality' walking and cycling routes across England.

The council said that while work on the bridge hasn't officially begun, surveys of utilities in the leat, where the new bridge will be built, have been conducted as part of the preparation process.

The council is still working through a detailed design stage and is hoping to submit a planning application this winter, either before or after the new year.

Based on this rough timeline, construction could begin in summer 2025 and be completed in autumn.

The funding has been secured from DfT’s Active Travel England fund, with local contributions from Exeter City Council and the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust.
