George’s Meeting House in Exeter, a former 18th-century Unitarian chapel now a JD Wetherspoon pub, will be featured on day six of a UK tour.

Last month, tour operator MyUKTour announced that they would be offering two holidays designed around the iconic UK institution: JD Wetherspoon.

George’s Meeting House, which is listed by Historic England as a site of special interest, was identified as a particularly intriguing spot for tourists.

The building retains many of its original features, including stained glass windows, a historical plaque, and original pulpit, which have been carefully preserved and integrated into the pub’s design.

This integration creates a unique atmosphere that differentiates it from other JD venues, serving as a reminder of the building's spiritual history.

Explaining their decision to select this venue in particular, Andrew Wills, owner of MyUKTour, said: “George’s Meeting House stood out to us as an obvious choice for inclusion on our southern tour.

“On day six, our tour group will visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery and Exeter Quay before stopping for lunch at George’s Meeting House.

“Situated in a building originally used as an 18th-century chapel, this venue offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

“The opportunity to enjoy a drink and a meal while surrounded by stained glass windows and the original pulpit certainly promises a memorable experience. The juxtaposition of the chapel’s religious heritage with the modern-day vibrancy of a Wetherspoons pub makes this location a fascinating destination, offering a rare chance to engage with history in a relaxed setting.

“One of the most compelling aspects of this particular venue is its close connection, both geographically and otherwise, to franchise owner Tim Martin. Martin lives just around the corner and has said before that George’s Meeting House is his favourite of all of the Wetherspoons pubs.”
