Gary Caldwell said he was not impressed with City’s performance after the first round against Walsall knocked them out of the Carabao Cup.
Millenic Alli’s goal during the first half put the Grecians 1-0 up, yet despite Joe Whitworth saving a penalty, an equaliser goal in the 93rd minute sent the game to a shootout to Walsall’s victory.
Gary felt that the team underperformed throughout the whole 90 minutes of play.
He said: "We made too many bad decisions tonight; around our own box, we were a little bit disrespectful in terms of trying to flick balls out of trouble.
"That's not us; I said that before the game to the players, we have to take this one on the chin.
"We haven't been good enough, and I thought Walsall were excellent."
The fixture did give Gary an opportunity to rotate his side, giving vital experience to young players like Pedro Borges and also giving Liam Oakes his debut.
"I think when you give young players opportunities in games like this and stadiums like this, they have to learn the hard way.
"It's a different environment to what they've ever faced before—Liam Oakes in particular; Pedro has some experience of it.
"I think no matter how it goes for them as a young player, you have to use that experience."
