Exeter Cathedral's 10am Choral Eucharist was abruptly interrupted by an unexpected fire alarm, leading to a swift evacuation of the congregation.

The service, which was celebrating the Feast of St Sidwell, Patron Saint of Exeter, did not come to an early end but continued to take place outside and surrounded by the cathedral green.

All in joyful spirits, the servers and clergy took the bread and wine with them and continued the service on the steps of the cathedral, to the sound of music and hymns.

The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were quickly in attendance and thankfully confirmed a false alarm.

Exeter Cathedral's Canon Treasurer, Canon Chris Palmer, was pleased to have the opportunity to take Sunday's service out onto Cathedral Green.

He said: “We were delighted to seize the opportunity created by a necessity. It was a lovely day, and the chance to worship outside the cathedral on the green was a great chance to share our worship with those passing by. A real party spirit!”

Exeter Cathedral also took to Facebook to address the incident that happened on August 4, saying: “An eventful Feast of Saint Sidwell! Thank you to all who acted swiftly today to relocate our worship following a fire alarm. Thank you, Virgers and Sidesmen, for your calm evacuation of the building, the congregation for remaining steadfast, our visiting choir, Alleyn Singers, who led our singing, and, of course, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for their swift attendance. Sidwell clearly wanted us to open the cathedral doors and worship in her city!”
