July 26 saw the return of Summer at the Quayside, with free activities taking place on the waterfront every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the school summer holidays.
Commissioned by the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust, the diverse programme of fun and colourful activities is all inspired by the unique waterfront setting.
The fun began when artists 3D Joe and Max created a unique salmon fishing boat on the Piazza Terracina, complete with the depiction of a legendary giant sturgeon swimming just beneath it.
Created using chalk and paints, the design has since been varnished in the hope that it will last a few weeks and make for an excellent photo opportunity.
If you hold your camera up at the marked camera point, the artistic work creates a 3D illusion where you and another person can look as though you are sitting in a real-life fishing boat.
Another regular Friday feature is Uncle Tacko and the Prom Prom team, who will contribute some more classic end of the pier fun to the Transit Shed from 11am until 3pm unless stated otherwise.
Event organisers have encouraged participants to expect the unexpected, as there could be storytelling, puppets, magic, games, and even a flea circus.
There is no shortage of fun events happening this week either.
On Tuesday, Devon Science is running a Bath Bomb Lab described as “fizztacular fun for all the family.”
On Wednesday, artist Lou Chapman is running an Air Dry Clay Workshop, where you can make your own clay face or flower to take home.
Also on Wednesday, PaddleBoat Theatre is staging a seaside takeover where you can write a sea shanty, meet the old Lighthouse Keeper, and contribute to a coastal collage.
The busy summer programme includes everything from art workshops to music, theatre, and nature ones.
Another incentive towards attending is that there is no need to book anything.
You can simply turn up and join in a summer of free fun.
If activities are not your preferred pastime, there are still a great number of businesses on and around the waterfront that you can visit whilst there.
