Microplastics were being widely ingested by Britain’s marine mammals
January 31, 2019 - A Devon-led study found that microplastics were being widely ingested by Britain’s marine mammals with samples found in every animal examined in a study.
The research on 50 stranded creatures including porpoises, dolphins, grey seals and a pygmy sperm whale was the most comprehensive analysis of microplastics in the digestive tracts of both wild cetaceans and seals at the time.
“It’s shocking – but not surprising – that every animal had ingested microplastics,” said Sarah Nelms, of the University of Exeter and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), lead author of the research published in the journal Scientific Reports.
