Fire ripped through leisure centre

Dozens of firefighters tackled a major blaze

December 20, 2017 - Firefighters were continuing to tackle a major fire that ripped through Exeter's Riverside Leisure Centre the previous afternoon.

At the height of the operation 120 firefighters were on the scene as well as ambulance and police crews.

Alphington Road was closed through te night and reopened at 3am.

Crews from across the Westcountry worked tirelessly to stop the fire spreading to the roof and two people were evacuated from the flats behind the swimming pool.

Swimmers were evacuated still in their swimming costumes and gathered outside. They were issued with blankets to keep warm and were later being looked after in the M&S Food store at the Exe Bridges Retail Park.
