Mum who battled skin cancer wins Apprentice of the Year award

Apprentice electrician at Exeter-based construction company Dragon Light and Power, emerged triumphant in the On The Tools Awards 'Apprentice of the Year' category.

Entries in each category were meticulously evaluated by a panel of judges, including industry experts such as previous winners Naima Ben-Moussa and Ricky Howell. The criteria encompassed expertise in their craft, contribution to the trade, and a fervent passion for their work.

Lizzie Corsten's nomination, submitted by a peer, highlighted her remarkable journey, overcoming significant challenges, including battling cancer.

The entry underscored Lizzie's positive attitude, dedication to the electrical industry, and her relentless pursuit of excellence, all while fulfilling the demanding role of a mother. Most notably, Lizzie has been instrumental in raising awareness of skin cancer within the trades.

Lee Wilcox, CEO and co-founder of On The Tools said: "I was delighted to see so many tradeswomen on our shortlist this year. Our Apprentice of the Year Lizzie is a shining example of how you can excel in this industry no matter your circumstances. Sometimes, they even make you a stronger tradesperson."

Lizzie Corsten, who works for Dragon Light and Power on Exeter Quay, said:"Every single person that's ever checked up on me is who I'm thankful for because that is the reason why I'm still going. It's everyone because the entire community has kept me going.”
