Lest we forget

Exeter's War Memorial

The Lord Mayor of Exeter Cllr Kevin Mitchell will join civic dignitaries, military personnel and veterans for this year’s Remembrance Sunday service at Northernhay Gardens.

This service, on Sunday 12 November, at 10.30am, will mark the 100th anniversary of the iconic City War Memorial, which will be decorated with thousands of knitted poppies created in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

The Grade II listed City War Memorial is the most prominent and imposing monument in Northernhay Gardens and was unveiled 100 years ago, in 1923.

Funded by public subscription, the structure reveals a dedication not only to the citizens of Exeter, but also to the people of Devon.

Cllr Martin Pearce, Exeter City Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “The City War Memorial has proudly stood in Northernhay Gardens for the last 100 years as a way of remembering all those who lost their lives in conflict.

“It is very fitting that its centenary should be marked current members of the armed forces, veterans and the public during the annual Remembrance commemorations at the memorial.”

All are welcome to attend the event. The order of service can be accessed at https://express.adobe.com/page/aKfxrUAjXrP1I

A number of other services will also take place in Exeter to remember those who have fallen in conflict.

On Saturday 11 November, at 10.35am, the Lord Mayor, accompanied by his Consort, will attend a short service to Dedicate the Royal British Legion Field of Remembrance, at Cathedral Green.

On Sunday 12 November, at 11am, the former Lord Mayor Mrs Yolanda Henson, accompanied by her Consort, will attend the Devon County Service of Remembrance at Exeter Cathedral.
