Organisers apologise after delay to fireworks event

November 6, 2021 - The organisers of a large firework event in Devon said 'sorry' after thousands of people were kept waiting for around an hour to watch the display.

Thousands of people attended Westpoint in Exeter the previous evening to watch Exeter Round Table's 38th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza in support of Devon Air Ambulance.

However, after arriving at the venue ready for the display at 7:30pm, spectators were kept waiting for roughly another 60 minutes in the cold.

Organisers of the event have said that they were "stuck between a rock and a hard place" due to the "unprecedented" number of people who showed up to the venue.

In a statement, the organisers said: "At 7:30pm we had to make the difficult decision to either close the gates and let thousands of ticket holders down, or try our best to get everyone in. We chose to delay as we think that on balance it would be the lesser of two evils."
