Pupils learning how Coastal Recycling turns garden waste into compost
Staff from Coastal Recycling team paid a visit to Farmwise Devon to teach youngsters about how they recycle garden waste into compost.
Primary aged children from 30 Devon schools saw the Exeter firm's composting process in action.
This included inspecting the fresh garden waste for potential plastics, glass or metal that could contaminate the batch, then the waste being put through our shredder ready for its 12 week sanitisation, stabilisation and screening phases.
A spokesperson said: "It was a great day and an absolute joy sharing our knowledge with these little legends."
Farmwise Devon runs a schools day in October where around 1,400 children between 7-11 years old discover all about where their food comes from. There are 12 zones illustrating the diverse range of agriculture in Devon as well as wildlife, forestry and environmental areas.
Coastal Recycling operates from four main sites across Devon and employs more than 150 people. The company handles in excess of 312,000 tonnes of material each year of which more than 90% will be recycled or recovered.
The spokesperson added: "From our services to our individual actions, our efforts to protect the environment comes first. Each year we grow, but we stay true to our roots, looking after the businesses that make Devon the place it is. Connecting with the local communities and educating with our sustainability knowledge is a key practice at Coastal and one we strive to achieve year after year."
