Cartridges Law is setting high standards when it comes to sustainability.
The St Thomas-based firm, which established its Green Team in 2021, has made a commitment to reduce its impact on the environment and it is looking to its staff to lead and make the changes required to meet its targets.
The company was recently recognised for this initiative when it won the award for sustainability at the 2023 Devon and Somerset Law Society (DASLS) annual awards ceremony.
The six members of the Green Team come from across all areas and departments of Cartridges Law and are tasked with leading and engaging the firm’s 35 staff in all aspects of sustainability.
Nicky Mein, managing partner at Cartridges Law, says: “The Cartridges Law Green Team epitomises what it means not just to adhere to environmental standards, but to lead by example and to engage all staff to become invested in the journey. The company had understood the urgent need to address its carbon emissions for some time but knew that the only way to make certifiable change was to enable staff at all levels to lead and engage others in the process.”
The team is given time each month to work on its initiatives and has joined the DASLS Sub-Committee on Climate Change. Through this the team was introduced to the carbon calculating platform Net Zero Now, which is creating a protocol for the legal sector to calculate carbon emissions, and given the opportunity to participate in a pilot scheme to test out and provide feedback on the protocol. Net Zero Now is working with the Law Society to approve and launch the protocol. Data provided by Cartridges Law will be validated and used to create a Climate Impact Report and Emissions Reduction Plan for the firm.
