Initially, Tottenham Hotspur was invited to tour Argentina but declined due to travel concerns. Exeter City accepted the offer, agreeing to terms that included £20 for each member, first-class return fare, and coverage of all hotel and travel expenses.
During their 1914 South American tour, Exeter City played several matches in Argentina, beginning with a 1–0 loss to Combinado Norte on at Racing Club's stadium.
They rebounded with a 3–0 win against Combinado Sur, followed by a 2–0 victory over Racing Club.
Their success continued with a 3–1 win against Liga Rosarina and a 3–0 triumph over Liga Argentina on July 9.
Despite these results, local newspapers offered mixed reviews of the team's performance.
After completing their fixtures in Argentina, Exeter City moved on to Brazil, where they defeated an 'English in Rio' team 3–0 and the Rio de Janeiro state team 5–3.
However, they faced a combined team of Brazilian players from Rio and São Paulo, losing 2–0 in what is now recognized as the first official game of the Brazil national football team.
The match, in 1914, held at Fluminense's Estádio das Laranjeiras in Rio de Janeiro, is particularly noteworthy. Brazil's line-up featured prominent early footballers, including Marcos de Mendonça and Arthur Friedenreich.
Brazil secured a 2–0 victory, with goals from Oswaldo Gomes and Osman. This game is celebrated as the birth of the Brazil national team, marking the beginning of their journey in international football.
Exeter City's involvement in this historic match has fostered a lasting bond between the club and Brazilian football. The club honours this historic connection, with fans passionately chanting lyrics that pay tribute to the iconic 1914 encounter:
