Nowell was in hot water over tweet

Jack Nowell's tweet landed him in trouble

April 17, 2023 - Jack Nowell was facing the prospect of disciplinary action from the Rugby Football Union for his outburst on Twitter (now X) during the Chiefs defeat to Leicester Tigers the previous day.

Nowell was one of several non-playing Chiefs to tweet after Olly Woodburn was sent off at Welford Road, having been shown a second yellow card.

He wrote: “I’m actually in shock, like shock shocked. What the hell is happening? That’s one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen. EVER.”

After the match Rob Baxter conceded that he could understand how the officials reached the decision while his opposite number, Richard Wigglesworth, revealed that a specific directive designed to stop the offence in question had been recently issued.

Nowell accepted the Rugby Football Union’s misconduct charge later that week and was fined £10,000 and ordered to attend a refereeing course.
