The event challenged some highly topical issues

More than 100 South West business leaders gathered at Rockbeare Manor near Exeter to hear leading speakers address the region’s skills challenge and the growing impact of AI on future growth..

The event formed part of EXIST, the Exeter Initiative for Science and Technology, a sub-group of Exeter Chamber that brings together business, academia and local government to encourage innovation, collaboration and investment in the region’s future economy.

Through regular events and forums, EXIST provides a platform to debate challenges, showcase opportunities and build meaningful connections across sectors.

Guests at the latest gathering heard from the Rt Hon Sir Mel Stride, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, who spoke about the importance of treating skills as infrastructure and embracing new technology for positive change.

Richard Potter, Director of Digital Strategy at Microsoft, stressed to delegates that AI must be used to empower people and create opportunities for progression rather than replace jobs.

Christina Cole, Head of UK & EMEA at AWS Skills to Jobs, outlined how accessible AI tools and modular learning pathways can help entry-level learners build digital confidence and transition into future-ready roles.
