"It’s not if, but when": ITEC’s Nick Parsons on cyber threats, AI myths and why support staff deserve the spotlight

Managed technology provider ITEC, a Xerox IT Solutions company, has returned to the Devon and Somerset Law Society Legal Awards as sponsor of the Support Team Member of the Year category.

After several years away from the DASLS Awards, Xerox IT Solutions renewed involvement signals its growing commitment to the region’s legal sector – and a shared appreciation for the people behind the practice.

“It’s great to be involved again,” said Regional Sales Director Nick Parsons. “We’ve had a few years away and we’re looking forward to returning. It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the people who are often the engine room of a firm.”

Xerox IT Solutions delivers a broad portfolio of managed IT services, including document management, cloud communications, cybersecurity, and digital workflow consultancy. The firm operates across the South West with offices in Plymouth and Bristol, as well as nationally, offering tailored support to legal practices of all sizes.

“We’ve worked with law firms for decades,” Nick explained. “We understand the industry, the terminology, the regulatory burden. Whether it’s secure print, scanning, digital workflows or robust cloud systems – law firms rely on technology, and we’re here to make it all work seamlessly.”

Now part of the Xerox family, Xerox IT Solutions combines the local understanding of a regional operator with the resources of a global technology leader. The acquisition has accelerated its push into cloud-based tools, intelligent document processing, and AI-led solutions that help firms reduce admin time and streamline case management.

“Being part of Xerox has unlocked new capabilities for us,” said Nick. “It means our clients get the latest tech and innovation – but with people on the ground who understand their business and can sit across the desk from them.”

That hybrid of global expertise and regional service is a crucial differentiator, particularly for legal firms facing increased client demand, tighter margins, and rising cybersecurity risks.

He points to the high-profile cyber attacks on M&S as reminders that no business is immune. “It’s not if, but when. Whether it’s an out-of-date system or someone clicking a dodgy link, there are always vulnerabilities. Our role is to make sure businesses have the right roadmap in place to respond.”

As a result, he says, firms are becoming increasingly aware of the risks. “We’ve seen more interest in off-site backups, secure document transfer, and proactive monitoring,” he added. “A lot of it comes down to education – making sure firms understand what data they hold, how it’s protected, and what their obligations are.”

No tech conversation these days is complete without a mention of AI. “There’s huge potential – but huge misunderstanding too,” Nick comments. “AI isn’t going to write your legal brief. But it can extract key data from scanned documents, summarise large reports, or route a case file to the right team automatically. These are small efficiencies that add up.”

Xerox IT Solutions often works with legal support teams to identify where automation or digitisation can free up time and reduce errors. That makes its DASLS Awards category feel like a natural fit.

“Support teams are the unsung heroes,” Nick said. “They’re managing workflows, documents, compliance – they’re holding everything together. We’re proud to recognise that.”

With decades of experience in the South West, Xerox IT Solutions' team understands the specific needs of local firms – and the realities of delivering technology in a region where connectivity, legacy systems, and change fatigue can often complicate progress.

“We don’t do cookie-cutter packages,” Nick said. “We’ll always start with a conversation. We sit down with clients, ask about their challenges, and then work out what combination of services is actually going to help. That might be a new phone system. Or it might be a better way to manage contracts and reduce print volumes.”

Looking ahead, Xerox IT Solutions is investing in training, AI integration, and cloud-first strategies to keep pace with the evolving demands of legal services. As the line between legal and tech continues to blur, Nick says the goal is simple: keep firms agile, secure, and free to focus on clients.

“We’re here to take the pain out of IT,” he said. “Our job is to make sure the systems are working, the data is safe, and your team can focus on what really matters – delivering great legal outcomes.”
