Property professionals might not be the first people you picture when it comes to environmental innovation – but Landmark Information Group is on a mission to change that.
Founded over 30 years ago, the Exeter-based firm is the UK’s leading provider of environmental risk data for land and property transactions. Whether advising estate agents, solicitors or developers, their role is to help people make sense of the land beneath their feet – and the future they’re building on.
For the DASLS Legal Awards 2025, Landmark is sponsoring the Sustainability Award – a category close to their hearts.
“Sustainability is a huge passion for us,” says Alison Parsons, Customer Success Consultant at Landmark. “We’ve been on our own net zero journey since 2020, and we want to bring other firms – especially law firms – on that journey too.”
While Landmark’s core service is data – from flood risk and contaminated land reports to energy infrastructure and coal mining records – their sustainability offering is about education and support. Through workshops, practical advice, and in-house expertise on ESG and biodiversity, they help legal teams understand and reduce their environmental impact.
“Sustainability in a legal setting often starts with the basics: reducing paper, rethinking travel, adopting cloud systems. But it goes deeper,” Alison explains. “It’s also about supply chains, how firms engage with their partners, and how they manage emissions as a business. You can’t just focus on your own footprint – you have to think about everyone you work with.”
The same philosophy applies to events. When it comes to DASLS itself, Landmark encourages thinking holistically – from how attendees travel to the venue to the sourcing of food and local accommodation options. “It’s about seeing the bigger picture.”
Landmark’s own footprint is shrinking – and they want to share the how-to.
From practical tools to tailored reports, the company equips law firms to better understand their carbon output and engage their teams in solutions.“We know it’s not one-size-fits-all,” Alison says. “Every firm is starting from a different place, but the important thing is to get started – and we’re here to support that.”
That collaborative spirit is one of the reasons Landmark continues to support the DASLS Legal Awards. Having attended the event for several years, they appreciate the opportunity to connect with the legal community in a meaningful way.
“It’s a great event – and we’ve had some fantastic speakers. Rob Rinder last year was a real highlight. He must’ve taken a thousand selfies. But seriously, it’s about more than the photos. It’s a brilliant way to meet the people behind the law firms and celebrate the progress that’s happening across the region.”
That progress is especially important in the context of environmental responsibility. Landmark’s hope is that by recognising firms leading the way, others will feel empowered to follow.
“In the end, it’s about stewardship. One of the DASLS committee members said it best: we’re responsible for the planet while we’re here. We can’t control everything in the world, but we can look after our bit.”
Looking ahead, Landmark wants to see environmental thinking woven into every legal conversation.
With a growing demand for transparency, especially among younger generations and future employees, firms who take sustainability seriously are already ahead of the curve.
“We’re here to support that shift. Whether it’s reducing emissions, rethinking the way we work, or just making people stop and think, we’re proud to play our part.”
