Exeter has been ranked among the top 10 regions in England with the highest five-year business survival rates, according to a new study by business energy experts Utility Bidder.
The research analysed a range of economic indicators, including GDP, employment rates, transport links, and energy efficiency, to determine which areas offer the strongest foundations for new enterprises.
Exeter placed eighth overall, with 51.7% of businesses surviving at least five years after launch.
West Devon topped the national chart, boasting a survival rate of 59%, followed by Rutland (54.8%) and North Devon (54.2%). Exeter joined regions such as Dorset, West Oxfordshire and Broadland in the top 10.
The findings suggest that Exeter’s resilient economy, skilled workforce and strong business support networks are contributing to long-term success for local entrepreneurs.
The study also highlighted wider regional strengths, such as Wokingham’s high proportion of energy-efficient commercial properties, Wyre Forest’s exceptional 88.8% employment rate, and Manchester’s office density - the highest in the country at 1,426.1 office spaces per 100,000 people.
