Clyst St Mary-based Fresh Accountancy Company has achieved carbon neutral status after partnering with reforestation non-profit Just One Tree.
The partnership is the latest in a series of eco-conscious moves by the firm as it works to strengthen its environmental credentials. By signing up for quarterly tree planting, Fresh will offset 32 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to the estimated emissions of the entire company based on a worst-case scenario of 4 tonnes of CO2 per employee.
Founder Tom Baker explained: "We’ve looked at different options including bringing in a consultant to work out our carbon emissions. However, we decided it was more beneficial to assume a worst case scenario of 4 tonnes of CO2 per annum per person and look for a practical way to offset this.
"Signing up with Just One Tree for quarterly tree planting will offset 32 tonnes of CO2 per annum, as well as benefitting the communities where the trees are planted, and ultimately help to tackle climate change."
The firm is already powered by renewable energy, having installed solar PV panels in 2023. Since then, the system has generated 6,136 kWh of power, saving an estimated 6 tonnes of CO2. Additional energy is sourced from suppliers using 100% renewable electricity.
Fresh has also made changes to reduce emissions in other areas of the business. Company vehicles were switched to electric last year, and an EV charging point was installed at the office. All waste is either recycled or converted into electricity by Devon Contract Waste.
The company’s office building has an EPC B rating, reflecting its low energy use.
Looking ahead, Fresh is exploring further green initiatives. "For the future, we’re looking at either providing electric cars for all employees or offering an incentive to switch, in a bid to reduce commuting emissions," said Baker. "We are also looking at installing an air source heat pump to reduce energy used for heating by as much as 50 percent."
Just One Tree supports reforestation efforts across Africa, Asia and South America, working with established local partners in areas affected by poverty. In addition to fighting climate change, the initiative provides sustainable income and agricultural education to local communities.
