West End legends named Patrons of Exeter Northcott

Celebrated theatre-makers to support University of Exeter and regional arts

West End legends named Patrons of Exeter Northcott

Three of the UK’s most acclaimed theatre professionals have been named Patrons of Exeter Northcott Theatre and will support the University of Exeter’s commitment to the creative industries.

George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, the award-winning musical theatre writing duo behind productions such as Mary Poppins, Honk!, and Half a Sixpence, join Nick Allott, a veteran theatre producer whose career includes executive roles on Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, and Hamilton. All three have deep ties to the University and Exeter Northcott, where their early careers were shaped.

Stiles and Drewe first collaborated as students at the University of Exeter, staging their debut production, Tutankhamun, at the Northcott Theatre, an experience that launched their careers. Reflecting on that moment, Stiles recalled: “I remember looking out at all those people clapping and thinking I could get used to this! That moment was the start of it all and led to our first meeting with Cameron Mackintosh.”

Drewe echoed the sentiment, adding: “As a student arriving at Exeter in 1980, I think the building I frequented the most was the Northcott Theatre, which probably didn’t impress my lecturers in the Department of Biological Sciences! If it hadn’t been for the theatre, my life and career would have gone in a very different direction.”

Allott also began his career at the Northcott, working backstage in the 1970s before embarking on a distinguished career in theatre production. Recalling his time there, he said: “One of my earliest memories was standing on the Northcott stage and holding out my arm to be used as a ballet bar for one of Rambert’s principal dancers! I had to learn quickly, but I loved every moment. It was my first job in theatre and laid the foundations for a long and happy career.”

On a return visit to Exeter last November, the three theatre figures watched a student showcase and provided mentorship to drama students, highlighting their ongoing commitment to supporting emerging talent.

Speaking about the appointment, Jane Milling, Head of the Department of Communications, Drama and Film at the University of Exeter, said: “The University has a strategic commitment to showcase, celebrate, and nurture the creative industries in the region, and we’re thrilled that Stiles, Drewe, and Nick Allott will work with us to support this mission.”

Martin Berry, Creative Director of Exeter Northcott Theatre, added: “Exeter Northcott has launched the careers of so many writers, directors, and performers. Regional theatres have a crucial role in developing new talent, and our new Patrons demonstrate how vital it is to give students the opportunity to stage their work in a professional setting. We are hugely grateful to George, Anthony, and Nick for their support.”

As Patrons, Stiles, Drewe, and Allott will make annual visits to Exeter, meeting students and South West theatre-makers to provide mentorship, guidance, and inspiration.
