Exeter Canal and Quay Trust seeks new Chair to lead

The Exeter Canal and Quay Trust, a charity dedicated to preserving and celebrating Exeter’s historic quayside, is looking for a new Chair to support its Board and drive its mission forward.

Established in 1981, the Trust has been instrumental in renovating, developing, and leasing heritage properties around Exeter Quay. It also funds and organises events that highlight the area’s remarkable history and vibrant community.

The Trust is widely recognised for hosting popular events such as the Exeter Heritage Harbour Festival, the Quayside Shanty Festival, and its Summer at the Quayside programme. It also manages the Exeter Custom House, a Grade I Listed building that has been transformed into a thriving cultural centre at the heart of the quayside.

In addition to its event programming, the Trust is committed to further celebrating Exeter’s Heritage Harbour status, working to ensure it remains an important part of the city’s cultural and economic landscape.

Through its Cultural Partners Programme, the Trust collaborates with organisations like Art Work Exeter and Literature Works, offering creative activities and performances at both the Exeter Custom House and across the Quayside area. External partnerships also bring markets, live gigs, and additional events to the waterfront, under the historic Transit Shed.

After many years of leadership and dedication, Independent Chair Alan Williamson has announced his intention to retire. The Trust is now seeking a new Chair with strong governance knowledge, financial acumen, and experience in chairing meetings to help lead the Board into its next chapter.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in guiding the Trust through a period of exciting potential, with a focus on Exeter’s unique waterfront and its cultural future. They must be able to dedicate time and energy to the role, bringing a mix of emotional intelligence and strategic vision.

The recruitment process is being supported by Shine Charity Recruitment. Jackie Dawkins, a consultant with Shine, is available to speak with potential candidates about the role. Interested individuals can reach out to Jackie via email at jackie@shinecharityrecruitment.co.uk for an initial discussion.
