In a refreshing approach to networking, Women in Business Exeter is rapidly establishing itself as a vital hub for female entrepreneurs in the area. Founded by Julia Macquisten, a PR and media expert specialising in the art and antiques market, and Emma Bewes, a life and business coach, the group focuses on fostering meaningful connections and offering practical support in an inclusive, casual setting.

Frustrated by the lack of networking opportunities that struck the right balance between professionalism and approachability, Julia and Emma decided to create their own space. "We found that other groups were sometimes intimidating and ‘hard sell’ or focused on wellbeing, whereas we just wanted to mix in a friendly and casual environment to exchange ideas and advice with no membership fee," Julia explained.

Emma added, "In today’s business world, time out and work/rest balance is key. Through Women in Business Exeter, we aim to provide the space necessary for women to thrive both individually and as part of a larger community."

The group’s monthly meet-ups, hosted in and around Exeter, combine informal coffee chats with creative activities, allowing members to unwind, share experiences, and collaborate. “Knowing that other people out there share your challenges and concerns is always reassuring,” Julia shared. “Especially when you can come together for an hour or so to discuss them and come up with innovative solutions - all while switching off from the daily grind.”

Emma highlighted the collaborative spirit of the group: "One member can provide a simple answer to something another has struggled with, and the rest of the group can benefit from that too. This sort of mutual support doesn’t have to be complex or costly, it’s all about getting together and having some fun while we do this.”

Looking to the future, Women in Business Exeter aims to expand its reach and impact. The founders plan to introduce ticketed events throughout 2025 while continuing to grow their popular coffee and chat mornings. This evolution reflects their commitment to creating diverse opportunities for local women to connect and succeed.

The group’s Instagram page (@womeninbusinessexeter) offers a glimpse into its vibrant community, showcasing everything from engaging events to success stories of members who’ve benefited from this collaborative network. With an emphasis on inclusivity, Women in Business Exeter has quickly become a go-to for women entrepreneurs seeking not just business growth but personal enrichment too.
