There is one site in Exeter, where the term ‘new building’ might not feel appropriate, but for the first time since the 1880s a fresh structure is being added to Exeter Cathedral.
The original cloister (a covered walkway) was destroyed in the 1650s and ever since then worshippers needing the toilet would have to venture to the facilities outside.
That will soon be about to change, as part of an ambitious redevelopment programme to conserve the historic building and make it welcoming to all.
This will also include improvements to the heating inside the cathedral itself, and a brand-new marble floor in the Quire. The new cloisters will connect the Nave with the Chapter House, toilets, café and new exhibition space, making the cathedral a much more welcoming space for the people of Devon to enjoy.
