Open-air cinema confirmed for Exeter

Princesshay and Exeter Phoenix have announced the return of Big Screen in the City — a five-day outdoor cinema experience set to bring blockbuster hits, cult classics and musical favourites to the heart of Exeter.

Running from 25 to 29 August, the event is now in its 22nd year and will move to a new location on Princesshay Square, with the illuminated Cathedral providing a striking backdrop.

The pop-up cinema will show ten films selected by Exeter Phoenix’s Studio 74, including Wicked (sing-along), Hook, The Wizard of Oz, Pretty Woman, Matilda the Musical, Flow, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Top Gun to close the programme.

Visitors can watch on a giant LED screen and listen through silent disco-style wireless headphones, supplied by Exeter-based Silent Social.

Claire Horrocks, Film Programmer at Exeter Phoenix, said: “Whether it's with friends, family or even strangers, cinema is best when experienced together. The opportunity to see this fantastic collection of films will be made even better by watching them outdoors. Exeter Phoenix love working with Princesshay and we can’t wait to share this event with the city.”

Seating options will include bean bags, first-come-first-served seating, and bookable deckchairs for evening and Bank Holiday screenings. The site will be fully accessible, with a wheelchair viewing area and access to Princesshay toilets.

The event is sponsored by Korev Lager and Coastal Recycling, with food and drink available from a pop-up bar, local vendors and take-out favourites such as POP Kitchen, Wagamama, Hanlee’s and YO! Sushi.

Nicole Bates, Marketing Manager at Coastal Recycling, said: “This is hands down the best line-up of films we’ve seen at a Big Screen event and attendees will be guaranteed great entertainment under the stars.”

Tickets are available now from £5 at exeterphoenix.org.uk/big-screen or by calling 01392 667080.
