Exeter’s literary scene is set to take centre stage once again as the much-loved Book Market returns to Cathedral Green on Sunday 8 June.

Now in its fifth year, the free event is hosted by Exeter City of Literature and brings together 12 of Devon’s finest independent bookshops for a celebration of stories, creativity and community.

Running from 11am to 4pm, the market promises everything from local authors and live readings to hands-on activities and literary-themed stalls.

Since launching in 2021, the Book Market has become a staple in the city’s cultural calendar, drawing readers, writers and curious passers-by for a one-day literary escape in the heart of Exeter.

Last year’s event introduced the now-popular Author Tent, where writers including Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson, Sarah Pearse, and Fiona Williams offered talks and signings to packed-out crowds.

This year’s author line-up is still under wraps but is expected to feature more big names and local rising stars. In the meantime, visitors can look forward to a packed programme of workshops, crafts and creative sessions for all ages — with everything from bite-sized bibliotherapy to comic-making and memoir tasters on offer.

Among the bookshops confirmed are Crediton’s award-winning The Bookery, Plymouth’s LGBTQ+ specialist The Old Queeriosity Shop, and Seven Fables, a folklore-focused bookshop nestled on Exmoor.

Anna Cohn Orchard, Executive Director of Exeter City of Literature, said, “Books have this incredible power—not just to transport us, but to connect us. And that’s what The Book Market is all about. It’s a celebration of stories, of readers and writers, and of independent booksellers coming together in one place.”

Catherine Hill, Head of Culture for Exeter City Council, added, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come together, discover new books, and celebrate the vibrant literary culture that makes our city so special.”

Whether you’re a page-turning pro, a poetry fan, or simply after a summery Sunday out, Exeter’s Book Market promises a joyful day filled with stories, snacks and stalls.

More surprises are still to be announced, but one thing’s for sure - Exeter is ready to read.
