5 fun things to do this weekend in Exeter: festivals, gigs, food and more

Here's out pick of fun things to do this weekend. Enjoy!

FESTIVAL

21-23 June

Coldharbour Farm’s Solstice Sessions

This festival, near Ottery St Mary, features a line-up of over 25 sets spanning reggae to rock, Americana and bluegrass, community choirs and more. Friday is ‘local bands’ day, Saturday celebrates roots and country, while Sunday has been designated as a day for chilling out. The location of the festival has extra appeal with soaring views over the East Devon countryside, perfect for revellers to relax and enjoy when taking a break to enjoy a drink or food. Day tickets start from £30.

MUSIC

23 June

CHARM OF FINCHES

Winners of the Australian Folk Music Awards Best Folk Album (2022), Australian sister duo Charm of Finches deliver intricate folk-pop that is simultaneously graceful and darkly bewitching. Their seamless blood harmonies traverse melancholy and wonder in equal measure. Starts at 8pm, at The Phoenix.

THEATRE

22 JUNE

THE MASSIVE TRAGEDY OF MADAME BOVARY

Emma Bovary is bored. She’s bored with her boring doctor husband, bored with her boring provincial village and bored with her role as a dutiful wife in (boring) nineteenth-century France. But Emma reads novels. Lots of novels. And in novels, life is much more fun… Now, four actors battle hilarious mishaps and misbehaving props to tell the (massively) tragic story of Madame Bovary. Expect vermin, visual absurdity, wild animals and a nun. On at Exeter Northcott Theatre. 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

FAMILY

22-23 June

JOUSTING AND MEDIAEVAL FAYRE

Get yourself down to Powderham Castle and cheer for your favourite knights as they battle it out at this jousting tournament! See sword fighting, battles, jesters, falconry displays and much more! This is your chance to have a go at axe throwing, archery and channel your inner Robin Hood and see if you can create a fort and catapult under the trees. Starts at 11.30pm.

FOOD

23 JUNE

EXETER DUMPLING DAY

Exeter’s first Dumpling Appreciation Day! Head to Exeter’s Custom House, on Exeter Quayside, to savour a scrumptious array of dumplings from all over the globe. You’ll also get the chance to meet the dumpling makers, and find out about their recipes and customs. Starts at 10am.
