David Southcombe and Carmen Ruiz Castell
North Devon bridge players David Southcombe and Carmen Ruiz Castell have claimed international success after winning a competition in Spain.
The couple’s victory in the Plate Competition at the Fuengirola International Bridge Congress last Sunday (March 29) was their second in as many years.
Mr Southcombe and Ms Ruiz Castell, who began their bridge partnership 15 years ago, beat more than 100 other players, including professionals, from multiple countries across Europe.
Success is not new to the pair, who have won tournaments in Spain, England and France.
Mr Southcombe said: “This has turned out to be our most successful year together. It started when we won the Fuengirola International Plate competition in March 2025, followed by a Pairs Cup in Deauville, France.
“We won a tournament in Santa Maria in Cadiz and retained our title in Fuengirola last week.”
The couple have also enjoyed local wins at the North Devon Pairs at the congress held in Barnstaple in February.
Bridge is a strategic, trick-taking card game played by four players in two competing partnerships.
Widely recognised as a “mind sport”, the game can help develop problem-solving abilities.
Mr Southcombe praised the benefits of the game and encouraged locals from North Devon to get involved with bridge clubs located in Barnstaple, Braunton, South Molton, and Westward Ho!
“For those who don’t know the game, it really is worth having a go,” he said.
“It’s a game for keeping you mentally alert and active in decision-making.”
Mr Southcombe explained how ‘it’s never too late to learn’ and highlighted the renowned teachers and coaches available in North Devon.
“In particular, I could mention Sally Anoyrkatis, who has introduced so many to the game.
“We are also very lucky to have Jacqui Munns as Chair of Devon Bridge, who is also working tirelessly to promote the game locally.”
Mr Southcombe and Ms Ruiz Castell will now turn their attention to the Devon County Congress on Friday 17 April to Sunday 19 April in Torquay, where they will look to continue their good run of form.
