Trail runner heaven with new Croyde coast run alongside popular tri event

Tri the Trail is a new North Devon running event this July, taking place on the same day as the Croyde Ocean Triathlon and raising money for Earth Action North Devon

The new Tri the Trail event for runners will follow the same stunning coastal route as the Croyde Ocean Triathlon.

A new running event along some of North Devon’s most spectacular coastal trails is being held this July alongside the popular Croyde Ocean Triathlon.

Tri the Trail on Sunday, July 12 means runners can now experience the event’s dramatic coastal trail for the first time, set against the backdrop of Putsborough Sands, Baggy Point, Croyde and Woolacombe.

Taking on a triathlon is a big step up for any athlete, so Croyde Ocean organisers have added the new event so more people can take part, with 5k and 11k races to suit both newer runners and hardy trail running enthusiasts.

Held in conjunction with local charity Earth Action North Devon, all proceeds from both events will go towards its work to help protect North Devon’s natural environment.

A favourite with triathlon competitors for its stunning coastal scenery, the Croyde Ocean features a full Olympic Triathlon with 1.5 kilometre ocean swim, 37km cycle and 12km trail run, with a half-length Sprint course also available to choose.

Tri the Trail will follow similar lines, with the Olympic 11 offering an 11km trail route across the three bays of Putsborough, Saunton and Croyde, featuring steep climbs, descents and sweeping sea views.

Those looking for a shorter but still worthy challenge can take on the Sprint 5 – a 5km coastal trail run taking in Baggy Point and panoramic views across Croyde Bay and Woolacombe.

Both races will start slightly later in the morning, with runners joining the atmosphere as the wider triathlon event is already in full swing.

Race director Jo Hibberd said: “We’ve always known what a special route this is, and we wanted to create a way for more people to experience it.

“Tri the Trail is for anyone who loves running, loves the coast, or simply wants to challenge themselves in an unforgettable setting.”

Those taking part can expect support from volunteer marshals and spectators around the course, before finishing in the heart of the event village overlooking Putsborough.

Jo added: “North Devon offers some of the best coastal running in the country, and this event is a brilliant way to experience it.

“It will be tough, beautiful and hugely rewarding and because it supports a local environmental charity, every step will help make a difference too.”
