A popular North Devon activity centre and charity has launched an appeal to bring sailing back to the waters of Wistlandpound Reservoir.

As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, Calvert Devon near Kentisbury has launched a £30,000 online Crowdfunder campaign to buy two new sailing boats and make improvements to the reservoir pontoon.

It says the project will open up new opportunities for guests of all abilities to experience time on the water.

Calvert Devon has not been able to offer sailing as an activity for a few years as the charity needed to replace its sailing boats and the appeal will seek to purchase two RS Toura boats for the purpose, alongside the pontoon upgrade.

Water activities are often some of the most memorable experiences for guests visiting the centre, but opportunities for accessible sailing remain limited across the UK.

By introducing the new boats and improving the pontoon access, Calvert Devon will be able to help more people safely experience the confidence, freedom and sense of achievement that comes with being out on the water.

The outward bound centre was established in 1996 to enable people with disabilities, additional needs and health conditions to enjoy adventure and outdoor activities such as horse riding and sailing alongside friends, families and schools.

Katrina McGrath, Calvert Devon marketing manager, said: “We’re incredibly proud of what Calvert Devon has achieved over the last three decades.

“But this birthday isn’t just about celebrating the past — it’s about investing in the future and making sure even more people can experience adventure without limits.”

The fundraising campaign forms a central part of the charity’s ‘30 Years of Adventure Without Limits’ anniversary programme, which will run throughout 2026. It includes community open days, storytelling projects and celebrations marking three decades of impact in North Devon.

Centre director Jennifer Young said the project represents the next step in the charity’s journey. She added: “Calvert Devon has always been about possibility - helping people discover what they can do, not what they can’t.

“This fundraiser will help us open up new experiences on the water and ensure the next generation of guests can continue to discover the confidence and independence that adventure brings.”

The charity is encouraging supporters, local businesses and the public to get involved by donating or sharing the campaign.
