A money-saving scheme designed to help residents cut costs while supporting local businesses is now open for permanent sign-ups across Torbay.

Torbay Council first unveiled its My Bay initiative in 2024, with the scheme officially launching for use from 1 January 2025. It offers residents discounts, free toilet access and extra parking time in a bid to boost footfall across the Bay.

Now, the scheme has been updated, with resident sign-ups and renewals open permanently and the introduction of digital cards, making it easier than ever for people to take part.

Open to anyone aged 16 and over living in Torbay, the scheme costs £10 to join and provides a range of benefits, including an extra hour of free parking when purchasing an hour or more in most council-run car parks, up to 33 free public toilet visits, and exclusive discounts at local businesses and attractions.

Participating venues already include cafés, restaurants, hotels and leisure attractions across Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, with offers ranging from discounted meals and drinks to reduced entry prices and retail deals.

The scheme is designed not only to help residents manage the rising cost of living, but also to encourage people to spend more time - and money - locally.

When it was approved by councillors in July 2024, it was estimated that the My Bay card could be worth between £45 and £75 per year to each user, depending on how often the benefits are used.

Speaking at the time, Council Leader Cllr David Thomas said: “I am delighted we are able to bring forward plans for the My Bay scheme.

“We know the cost of living has spiralled in recent times, so we hope this scheme will help people get better value for their money and I encourage them to take advantage of the attractive offers that have been put together.”

Cllr Adam Billings, Cabinet Member for Pride in Place and Parking, added: “We want to support local businesses as well as our residents and we expect the scheme to increase footfall and trade, so we are sure it will be welcomed by our business community as we work hard to regenerate our towns.

“We are keen to encourage people who live here to visit our town centres and attractions in increasing numbers, to save money, spend time out in our beautiful Bay, and make the most of what our fantastic local businesses and attractions have to offer all year round.”

Residents can apply online via the council’s My Torbay portal, where they will need to provide proof of address. Those applying for a parking permit must also supply a driving licence and vehicle registration document.

Physical cards and permits are still available, but digital versions can now also be used. Each card is valid for a fixed period, with the scheme set to be reviewed annually.

Travel savings include money off airport runs with Price First Taxis, offering £5 off return trips to Exeter Airport and £10 off journeys to other UK airports and ferry ports when booking with a My Bay card.

Food and drink deals range from double points at Babbacombe Inn to 10 per cent off at The Hideaway, with Small World Tapas and Gurkha's Diner offering similar discounts. Shoppers can also get 30 per cent off online orders from Bays Brewery.

Along the seafront, cardholders can enjoy 20 per cent off at Geo Park Cafe and neighbouring eateries, while family treats are covered with offers at Molly's Ice Cream & Donuts.

Leisure savings include discounted swimming at the Riviera International Centre and cheaper cinema tickets at Vue Cinema Torbay.

Local businesses can continue to sign up to the initiative, with more offers expected to be added throughout the year.
