Barnstaple Rugby Football Club finally ended a run of four straight defeats with an outstanding and tense 24-23 win over second-placed Luctonians in the National League 2 West division.

After falling behind to an early unconverted try, Barum drew level with a score from Brendan Darley, converted by Jake Murphy. The visitors racked up a couple of penalties to restore their lead but the final word of the opening half fell to Bertie Stretch.

Leading 14-11 at the interval, Murphy extended the advantage with a penalty before a converted score from Luctonians edged them one point ahead.

Barnstaple went up a gear once more, replacement Dominic Robson diving over on 66 minutes and Murphy notched the crucial conversion. Luctonians tested home nerves with a try in the final ten minutes but when the conversion flew wide, the job was done for a valuable victory.

Barum face the long trip to Chester this weekend and then back on home turf for the visit of Redruth at the end of February. Barnstaple Athletic produced a rampant display in Cornwall to defeat Redruth 2nds 45-25.

A poor first-half performance ultimately cost Bideford their place in the quarter-finals of the National Cup, as they succumbed to defeat at Bude. The Chiefs were better in the second half but the damage had been done.

South Molton were impressive efficient in their 34-7 win over Topsham with Tim Holland the leading performer, with the club describing his showing as “a strong all-round performance, capped with a well taken try, and consistent impact throughout the game. Fully deserved recognition after a dominant team display.”

Ilfracombe RFC will be desperate to get back on the pitch after the recent inclement weather, as they welcome Brixham 3rds to Brimlands this weekend.
